Primary headaches in children represent a significant public health problem due to high prevalence, estimated at around 60 %. The most common types include migraine and tension-type headache.
The diagnostic criteria for headaches in children are the same as those in adults and are based on the third edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3), but the clinical presentation of primary headaches in children may differ from that of headaches in adults.
The diagnosis of primary headaches in children is based on a careful history and clinical examination, which is important to exclude secondary causes of headaches. Most primary headaches can be diagnosed without the need for neuroimaging.
A longer course of headache increases the risk of developing chronic headache and associated comorbidities, so it is important to establish a diagnosis as early as possible and implement preventive measures.
Acute therapy includes medications such as analgesics (paracetamol, ibuprofen) or triptans for migraine treatment, while prevention is based on lifestyle changes, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and drug intervention. An individualized approach is the key to successful treatment of primary headaches in children.
