Abstract

Chronic cough in children poses a complex diagnostic and therapeutic challenge due to a variety of possible causes. Although respiratory tract infections, asthma, allergic rhinitis and laryngopharyngeal reflux are among the most common causes, the importance of less common causes such as cystic fibrosis, primary ciliary dyskinesia or tuberculosis should not be overlooked. An appropriate diagnostic approach includes a comprehensive history, a thorough physical examination and relevant diagnostic tests to rule out serious causes. Early identification and treatment of the causes of chronic cough is critical to improving the quality of life of children and their families. To reduce the incidence of chronic cough and improve children's health, it is important to promote preventive measures such as immunisation, reducing exposure to irritants (e.g. tobacco smoke) and promoting healthy lifestyle habits. The application of new research findings and knowledge about the pathophysiology of chronic cough may also help in the development of more effective therapies and treatment strategies.
In conclusion, chronic cough in children requires a careful and comprehensive approach that includes diagnosis, treatment and prevention. By working together with healthcare professionals and educating the family, we can ensure better control of symptoms and a significant improvement in the quality of life of children facing this challenge.
